If you are a prophet, then a bible study seems to be the most boring thing in your life! However if you are more of a teacher, you perhaps wonder why sometimes you seem to be the only one to have a passion for the Word of God.
But wait! You can go into the Word and make a little study in your home church group or with your worship team! You can do a bible study that is prophetic, practical AND exciting!
Take a short story from the bible. Let's say for example the story from Matthew 20:29-34, where Jesus passes by the two blind men and they cry, "Have mercy on us, O Lord, you son of David."
This is a very short story of only five verses, and it is absolutely perfect for a bible study!
So let me show you now how to approach this:
Imagine that you are leading the study and there are 4 other people with you (Daniel, Lauren, Robert and Justin). Read the passage through for yourself so that you know what the story is about. Do NOT set your mind on a doctrine or on a special message that you want to 'pull out of the text'.
Now, when you come together in the group, hand everyone a copy of the bible text and ask the Lord to take control of the meeting. Start by reading just one verse.
So you would start by reading Verse 29: "And as they departed from Jericho, a great crowd followed him."
Alright, that was pretty easy so far. But now comes the key: Apply every single verse to your current situation and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you. Ask what everyone sees or what revelation they get.
"Hmm, obviously Jesus had a lot of people following Him. They must have recognized that He was not just an ordinary man," says Daniel.
Lauren adds, "Yes, He went out to travel."
"That's great. Let's see how it goes on (V. 30): "And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, [you] Son of David."
Robert starts having a certain look on his face and says, "Well to be honest, lately I just feel like those two men. I kind of feel like Jesus is just passing by, and all I can do is cry out for His mercy. But I can't see Him!"
Justin says, "I find it interesting that they recognized Him as Lord, even though they were the ones that could not see and were rejected by all the other followers."
"OK, let's see what will happen next." (V. 31): "And the multitude rebuked them, because they should remain silent: but they cried all the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, [you] Son of David."
"Oh dear!" Daniel says again. "The Holy Spirit just reminded me about how I rebuked a brother so harshly the other day. He was just complaining and I couldn't bear his words anymore. So I freaked out a bit and told him to shut up. But I did it in bitterness and anger. I really need the forgiveness from the Lord now!"
"Go ahead and pray... we will continue the study afterwards."
"Let's read the next verse (V. 32): "And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What do you want me to do for you?"
Now Daniel can't help himself, and you can see how the Lord really starts to do something in his heart. He says, "I just see how Jesus changed His plans for the two 'unimportant' men. He stopped His journey and gave them attention, even though everyone else rejected them. How do we react when we have made our plans and then someone comes to us with a need?"
Lauren doesn't say anything, but just agrees by slightly nodding her head. Then Robert adds, "I´m just amazed that Jesus asked them what they wanted. He did not just treat them superficially, but gave them real attention."
"Yes that is great, Someone else can read the next verse now." (V. 33): "They said to him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened."
Here Justin had a real revelation. "I just realize," he says, "that we need to express our faith in words, although Jesus already knows what is in our hearts. We cannot just think of what we would like, but we must express it."
"Awesome! Let's see how Jesus responded to that in the last verse. (V34): "So Jesus had compassion [on them], and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him."
Robert, who has been quiet since they discussed verse 30, says, "Now I know what to do! I must ask the Lord for the concern in my heart. I was always waiting for Him to do something, and I thought it would just happen!"
Lauren and Daniel are just touched by the compassion that Jesus showed.
As the leader you can go ahead now and wrap everything up. You can bring it to a close and let everyone pray a short prayer about what he or she received through the Word.
The important thing is that you identify the message that the Lord wants to give through His Word TODAY. You can do the same study on the same couple of verses again, and every time it will come out differently. Why? Because you asked the Lord to speak to you through His Word, to make it alive. It will be like a prophetic word that speaks into your life and brings conviction, encouragement or exhortation. The written word becomes as [rhema] word that is alive.
You will have some awesome times in the Word! You will get new revelation and you will surely never forget some of the scriptures that you made a study about, because the Word will be alive in you forever!
Be Blessed!
